As part of our official launch, we’ve completed a full refresh of every provider in the Newspaper Finder database.
We’ve added 9,433 new newspaper listings, along with 696 locations that now have newspaper coverage for the first time. In practical terms, that means hundreds of places that previously returned no results now have at least one known digitized newspaper.
Additions by Provider
As seen below, the majority of new additions came from a small number of providers: Advantage Archives and Newspapers.com are the clear winner in new publications over the last year. Newspapers.com remains one of the largest and most actively updated newspaper platforms, and this update reflects their continued expansion.
Advantage Archives is perhaps the most surprising case. While it is a well-established and reputable database, its growth model differs significantly from commercial platforms like Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank, which actively pursue and acquire new content. Instead, Advantage Archives expands through partnerships with local institutions, such as libraries, historical societies, and newspaper publishers. Based on the volume of added newspapers over the last year, we believe that this highlights how local communities are taking a more active role in ensuring their own histories remain accessible.
Even after these additions, OldNews is still the largest newspaper database on the Internet. However, they are not shown in the chart above. OldNews has added around 30 million new pages per month, but this is not yet reflected on their publication list. Newspaper Finder will later incorporate these additions. In the meantime, their new titles and expansions are still available by searching directly on OldNews.
Some users may be aware that NewspaperArchive experienced a cyberattack in February 2026, which took the site offline for nearly two months. While the site is now back online in a limited capacity, their publication listing page is still unavailable. Because of this, we have not been able to collect new data from them since November 2025. That said, this update does include 585 additional publications that were added to NewspaperArchive between March and November 2025.
Additions by Location
About 75% of the 696 newly added locations are within the continental United States. At first glance, the additions appear to be spread fairly evenly across the U.S., with nearly every state gaining at least one new entry. However, a closer look reveals some regional patterns, with notably higher concentrations of new coverage in Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, and along the Northeast coast.
The remaining 25% of new locations are mostly within the British Isles and Australia. However, this update also expands our international coverage, with newly represented countries including:
- Nigeria
- Kuwait
- Liberia
- Nicaragua
Final Note
We also want to thank everyone who submitted new databases for inclusion. We received nearly 50 suggestions, and those will be incorporated in an upcoming update.
Lastly, many of you have expressed interest in searching by newspaper title. We are currently developing a new feature that will allow you to search across all parameters—including titles—within a catalog table. If maps aren’t your preferred way to explore, stay tuned!
